amLocal artist Linda Elliot is a bit like a sparkly gemstone: she is a brilliant woman with many facets. It might have been enough that the Eastern Shore native had a long career in community health care in central Virginia and Boston. But, she also is a fine jewelry maker; a potter; a painter in oil, watercolor and pastels; and is a caterer and topnotch baker of wedding cakes. To boot, Linda owns an aviary and an apiary — she is raising a gorgeous flock of egg-laying hens and has several bee hives.
Although she’d already earned a Bachelor of Science at University of Maryland and a Masters from University of Virginia, Linda earned the Silver Key Award while studying at the Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute in Rhode Island, then operated a successful catering agency for eight years.
Eventually, Linda and her husband, anesthesiologist Dr. Terry Walman, moved from New England to a waterfront home in the Orchard Beach neighborhood, not very far from Cantler’s Restaurant. Affiliated with Anne Arundel Medical Center, Terry is in a
private practice. Their two daughters are Whitney Walman, 24, now in New Hampshire; and Catharine Walman, 20, a student at Anne Arundel Community College. Family members include an inquisitive, friendly yellow labrador and two cats.
Linda continued catering while taking pottery and art classes in Annapolis and Baltimore. She learned to craft incredible, intricately detailed jewelry, much of it utilizing sterling silver, precious metal clay and fused glass. It is hard to believe she
creates by hand the multitude of interlocking links in each silver necklace.
Raising honeybees in her backyard, Linda harvests the honey and honeycombs. The honey is bottled. The wax is formed into beeswax candles or luminous bowls that look, at first glance, like alabaster orbs. Dried pressed botanicals applied to one side form an attractive floral pattern on the unique bowls. Linda’s jewelry, crafts, artworks and foods are sold at juried craft shows in five states under her label, Blue Heron Creations (www.blueheroncreations.com ).
Linda will be one of dozens of juried artists at the 10th annual ALS Artisan Boutique at the Sheraton Annapolis Hotel, 173 Jennifer Road in Annapolis, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
If you can wait a few weeks more, Linda’s mouth-watering, culinary art talents will be on display. She is an adjunct instructor at AACC in its Hospitality, Culinary Arts and
Tourism Institute.
During the winter semester, Linda is teaching six, noncredit courses that will more than whet your appetite. “You can sign up for one or as many as you want,” she said.
“During the chef demonstrations, you make it and then eat it. The value of the food is worth more than the cost of the class.” For class times, dates and costs visit
